By Dr. Thomas N. Tavantzis
This past week, I wrapped up teaching my spring graduate management course, Psychological Assessments in Organizations at the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University. As our final class came to a close, I felt the weight of the current stress, upheaval, and societal uncertainty that my students—and I—were facing or would soon face in our personal and professional lives. Some were preparing to enter the workforce, others were transitioning careers, and many were grappling with unforeseen life challenges.
In that moment, I felt compelled to say something—to leave them with a message of hope. Yet I struggled. What could I say that would be meaningful, especially as I, too, felt the uncertainty of what lay ahead? Finally, I spoke from my heart and encouraged them to remain resilient in the face of uncertainty, emphasizing that resilience is especially crucial during times of rapid change.
Why did I choose this message for my parting words to a group of students I likely wouldn’t see next semester? Perhaps because spring is approaching—baseball is returning, the flowers and trees will bloom, and the birds I see daily outside my window will return. And with this change of season, a phrase emerged in my mind: “Hope springs eternal.”
I believe there is something even deeper at work—something archetypal that speaks to hope, renewal, and the cycles of life.
The Symbolism of Persephone: A Story of Renewal
Spring has always been a season of revitalization, and as a Greek American, I often find myself drawing inspiration from Greek mythology. One of the most powerful stories tied to this season is that of Persephone, the goddess of spring and daughter of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture.
According to myth, Persephone emerges from Hades—the Underworld—each spring, bringing renewal and life to the world above. Her return symbolizes growth, transformation, and rebirth, while her descent back into Hades signals the arrival of autumn and winter’s dormancy. This cyclical journey reflects profound themes of life, death, and awakening.
Persephone’s story offers timeless lessons about transformation, resilience, and balance:
-
- Transformation and Growth – Persephone’s evolution from an innocent maiden to the queen of the Underworld symbolizes personal growth. Her journey into Hades represents confronting darkness and challenges, which ultimately lead to maturity and wisdom upon her return.
- Resilience through Adversity – Persephone’s dual role as both the goddess of spring and queen of the Underworld highlights her ability to endure hardship and emerge stronger. Her story reminds us that growth often arises from adversity.
- Balance and Integration – Persephone reconciles the light and dark aspects of her existence, teaching us that embracing both joy and struggle is essential for personal and professional growth.
Her myth serves as a powerful metaphor for navigating life’s challenges while finding strength and harmony within ourselves.
Discovering Strength and Harmony from Within
The concept of drawing strength from within has been central to my journey, dating back to my early years in Greece, where I trained as a psychologist during the country’s emergence from dictatorship in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Under my mentor’s guidance during this transformative period, I learned to help others tap into their inner resources—the strengths that perhaps lay dormant, perhaps underutilized within all of us. Over time, I realized that my mission required not only compassion but also a strong grounding in psychological science.
In my search for tools to support this mission, I discovered the Highlands Ability Battery (HAB) over 30 years ago (circa 1993). Grounded in scientific research in human engineering, this aptitude assessment has profoundly shaped my approach to career and professional development, providing a structured way to help individuals unlock their full potential.
Growth as the Foundation of Professional Development
At its core, growth is the foundation of all professional development. Most assessments or evaluations focus on external feedback—information directed at individuals from outside sources. While this feedback is valuable, what is often missing is insight from within— information revealed by objectively measured aptitudes. This internal understanding offers a deeper awareness of why certain behaviors or tendencies exist. It also provides leaders and aspiring professionals with opportunities to target their growth more effectively.
The Highlands Ability Battery (HAB) bridges the gap between external and internal awareness by providing an objective measurement of cognitive abilities, or aptitudes. Unlike self-reported assessments, the HAB evaluates specific aptitudes through timed, performance-based tasks, eliminating subjectivity and offering a precise understanding of an individual’s natural strengths.
The assessment measures key abilities such as visual accuracy, inductive reasoning, verbal aptitude, spatial thinking, and more. By focusing on innate abilities rather than learned skills, the HAB provides a clear, individualized picture of how a person naturally thinks, learns, and works.
When external feedback is combined with internal self-awareness, professionals—current and aspiring—can:
-
- Understand Behavioral Tendencies: Gain insight into patterns of strengths and challenges that shape behavior.
- Participate Fully in Growth: Take an active role in personal development by understanding one’s unique aptitudes.
- Manage Resources Efficiently: Balance time, effort, and energy wisely to meet responsibilities while adapting to changing demands.
- Leverage Talents Effectively: Identify specific strengths to maximize potential.
- Delegate Strategically: Recognize areas where responsibilities can be shared or delegated.
- Appreciate Others’ Talents: Foster collaboration by valuing the unique abilities of colleagues or team members.
This self-awareness is critical, especially in times of uncertainty. Knowing who we are at our core provides stability and direction when the world around us is in flux.
A Season of Renewal: Embracing the Journey
As spring approaches—a season synonymous with renewal—I am reminded once again that hope springs eternal. Just as Persephone emerges from the shadows each year, bringing life back to the world above, we too can rise from periods of uncertainty, stronger and more self-aware.
Growth is not a linear path but a continuous cycle of learning, adaptation, and transformation. By embracing both external insights and internal self-awareness, we empower ourselves to navigate life’s complexities with confidence, resilience, and purpose. More importantly, in doing so, we become a source of guidance and inspiration for those around us—helping others uncover their own strengths, embrace change, and step forward into their full potential.
