Professional and personal development drives us. That’s probably no surprise considering The Highlands Company is focused on transforming careers through the Highlands Ability Battery and our four-part Whole Person Method.
That’s why we don’t just love TED Talks. We study them! Here we share our favorite professional development TED Talks. Take a few minutes to enjoy, and be sure to tell us about yours, too.
The power of introverts
There’s nothing shameful about introversion. In this TED Talk by Susan Cain, she discusses her experiences as an introvert living in a world that expects extrovert behavior. One of the things we love about this video is her humor and also her emphasis on successful introvert leaders.
Why some of us don’t have one true calling
Highlands Certified Consultant Kim Fisher Turner brought this TED Talk to our attention, and we’re so glad we did. We think the interest overwhelm leads many to career confusions. We also love the way she describes and holds up the differences between Generalists (something she calls multi-potentialites) and Specialists. “Embrace your inner wiring!”
Build a tower, build a team
Have you tried the marshmallow tower challenge? It’ll change the way you think and the way you work with your team. We highly recommend this exercise in team building programs, but, first, we recommend you watch this TED Talk by Tom Wujec. See what kindergartners do better that business school graduates.
Why we have too few women leaders
This video has millions of views, and for good reason. Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, is famous for having written her book Lean In. It’s an inspiration for men and women interested in launching women in the workforce.
The new era of positive psychology
We deeply identify with what Dr. Seligman says about creating a happy life in this TED Talk. While not a talk that specifically addresses professional development, the ideas here apply to our work lives in huge ways. It’s an oldie but a goodie.
What are your favorite professional development TED Talks? We’d love to hear from you.
