Habit #2 of highly effective people according to Dr. Covey is to begin with the end in mind. So while getting admitted into a “right-fit” college is important, so is leading a successful and happy life afterwards.

This is why I take a comprehensive approach to college planning. Admissions and financial fit are two sides of the same coin. What’s the point of getting admitted to a great school if you cannot afford it? And what’s the point of finding an affordable school if you cannot get admitted?

Back when I was a high school student, it was hard enough to decide what I wanted to do or want to major in. But nowadays, it’s a million times worse for our kids with all the social media constantly bombarding them.

Here is my analogy: if you could look inside your child’s head, it’s constantly spinning in every direction, just like a compass would if you put a magnet next to it. The best way I can help a student stop the spinning is by using an aptitudes assessment. It’s like we pulled the magnet away from their compass. And now we can help the student find their personal “true north” by seeing what’s their natural abilities.

This is a pivotal step in helping a student develop their personal brand – a crucial element to a successful college application. I love helping students find the right colleges for them and then create a winning admissions strategy.

I am a former financial aid director from the University of Southern California. I helped co-create California’s Cash for College program 25 years ago. It is still being used today by the CA Student Aid Commission. I know how to help families qualify for more financial aid. But more importantly, I can find colleges that fit the family’s budget.

For the past 15 years I’ve been helping students find the right-fit colleges in terms of 1) academic fit, 2) financial fit, and 3) emotional fit. Once we have a list of right-fit colleges, I help the student position their genuine self in an authentic way so they standout on the college admission and scholarship selection process.

In the end, I want both the student and parents to win when it comes to this crazy roller coaster ride called college.
