Barrett Brooks
Focus
:I am a writer and executive coach. I work with mission-driven entrepreneurs using business as a force for good to solve hard, but important societal problems. My specialties are in helping clients cope with the emotional challenges of leadership, growing from founder to CEO, hiring and structuring teams, scaling revenue and teams, and building strong organizational culture. The Highlands Ability Battery helps focus our work into the highest leverage areas.
The two most common groups of founders I work with are:
1. Professional creators who have grown their businesses to at least $1M in revenue. My clients have typically either hit a revenue plateau or are struggling with overwhelm and burnout as they try to keep up with business growth. Our work focuses on how they can transform their roles to match their natural abilities, how they can structure and hire a team to support them, and how they can grow in their leadership abilities to grow from solopreneur to CEO.
2. Startup founders who are driven by a desire for impact and revenue. They are working to combat climate change, preserve biodiversity and the natural world, and create products that are healthy and sustainable for both humans and the planet. Our work focuses on handling the many demands that come with scaling revenue and team, whether as a first time or serial founder.
Experience
:I am a former startup executive turned executive coach. Previously, I was the VP of Communications for a renewable energy company, the COO of a local Portland coffee company, and the COO of an email marketing software company called ConvertKit. In my five years at ConvertKit, we grew revenue from $3M to $28M in annual recurring revenue and grew the team from 20 to 75 people. 65 of those people reported in to me as COO. I have also held various volunteer roles, including as managing editor of The Carbon Almanac (a bestselling book about climate change), Community Champion for the Global Shapers (an initiative of the World Economic Forum), and as board chair for Camp Horizon (a nonprofit restoring dignity and hope to children in state custody due to abuse and neglect in Atlanta, GA).
