Paper & Pencil Version
Highlands presently offers two versions of the Ability Battery — a Paper & Pencil version and a CD version. An Internet version is being developed and will soon be accessible from this website. The Paper & Pencil version consists of 20 work samples, each performed manually in response to instructions from a Highlands Affiliate. One of the worksamples, for example, measures the individual's Spatial Relations Visualization. Scores in this worksample indicate whether the individual is a structured thinker or an abstract thinker. The individual is shown a three dimensional object and is then asked to select the same object — after it has been rotated in space — from a group of three possible options.

Another worksample measures an ability which Highlands calls Classification.
This assesses an individual's ability to see relationships between seemingly unrelated events or data — the ability to move easily from the specific to the more general in solving daily problems. The individual is shown a set of seven objects and is asked to choose the three which are most closely related to each other. In the example below, the correct choices are the book, the calendar and the playing cards (they are all made of paper).
The Paper & Pencil Battery is administered either one-on-one or in groups by a Highlands Affiliate especially trained in the administration and scoring of this assessment. After the assessment is completed, the individual's scores are fed to the Highlands Technical Center which produces the individual’s bar chart and report.
